Just out of the kiln today – autumn lanterns

I love pairing my fused glass with light, and make all sorts of candle holders. But another thing I like to to, is keep my eyes open for interesting lanterns that I can adapt for fused glass.  I liked the bronze colour of this pair, so discarded the normal glass they came with, and made up some patterns in warm, autumn colours to complement the colour of the lanterns themselves.

After opening the kiln today, I cleaned up the fused glass pieces and carefully inserted them into the lanterns. I’m delighted with the results.

These lanterns have to be stored inside, but they would be ideal to set out on a garden table for a supper party (maybe lit with a citronella tealight to keep the bugs at bay). There is a nice, natural feel about those earthy colours of brown, moss green and deep red. You could of course put a small pillar candle inside, but I always recommend tealights, or the larger votive candles – as the coloured shadows cast will be all the more interesting with a low-lying light.

I can just image how cute they’ll look at Christmas time, fitting in nicely with the reds and greens of the festive decorations.

I’ve tried to capture the light, texture and shadows in some photos below. Hope you like them!
